Projects

There are two ways to help develop new versions, even if you are not a programmer:

BBPress is forum software created by the same developers--it can be integrated with WordPress to create a CMS/forum+blog combination site.

Habari

Habari is also a port, so to speak, of WordPress—a stripping-down then building back up, much like digital boot camp.

Habari's default theme is K2:

Lyceum

Lyceum is the newest of these listed projects; it's a fork of WordPress, allowing multiple blogs under the same installation. The exciting part—for us geeks, at least—is that it was created and is being developed by the esteemed research and information site, ibiblio.org.
This project was profiled in Issue 19 of Red Hat magazine, by John Joseph Bachir.

WordPress MU

WordPress Mu (aka, WordPress µ) is a fork of WordPress that allows multiple blogs under the same installation. WordPress Mu is being used by Harvard University's Law School's blogs.
WordPress Mu was created, and is actively developed by Donncha O Caoimh (Image:Feed.png feed), with continuing assistance from Matt Mullenweg.
