ThePlanet Migration

Site5 is moving our server fleet to ThePlanet!
We are excited about our partnership with ThePlanet! This migration will allow us to significantly upgrade the hardware our server fleet utilizes which in turn creates a better hosting experience for you!
The Process
- A server at The Planet is provisioned. Once complete, it is ready to accept data from an existing server.
- IP addresses are added to the new server and an IP address map is formulated. An IP address map is simply a list of old IP addresses and their respective new IP address.
- A full restore from backups already located at The Planet is performed on the new server. This restore includes server configuration files as well as customer files, email, and MySQL data.
- At this point, services are turned off on the old server.
- An rsync is performed on the live data to bring the migrated server fully up-to-date.
- IP addresses will be updated on the new server.
- DNS updates begin. This process updates our DNS servers to use the new IP addresses.
- Data is compared between the old and new servers; any data modified since the backup will be restored to the new server.
- Backstage is updated with your new IP address.
Migration complete!
Suggestions
As it is the golden rule in the IT world, we strongly suggest all clients perform backups regularly and prior to their migration. We have a wiki article that outlines one way of backing up your hosting account. This being said, we take this migration very seriously and will do everything we can to ensure a smooth migration for everyone.
