How do I transfer my webmail?

IMAP is the key here. If your current host supports IMAP, you would start by setting up any IMAP enabled email program (we used Mozilla Thunderbird in our examples)

Setting up IMAP
First verify your current host offers IMAP ability. If so, setup your mail client to connect to your current host using IMAP protocols. Do NOT use POP/SMTP, as many email programs - by default - will delete the mail from the server after retrieving it, and keeping a backup in case things go awry is helpful.

Once connected, click "Get Mail". This should download all mail and mail folders to your computer - but not delete them on the server. Check to ensure all folders and emails are located in your email program.

You are now ready to upload to your new server.

Create a new account in your email program:

Tools >> Account Settings >> Add Account

If your domain has not yet propagated, you can use server-name.site5.com as your mail server (where server name is the name of the server your hosting account is located). Make sure to use your full email address as your username and that you setup the new account as IMAP.

Setting up IMAP - Two accounts
You should now have two email accounts setup in Thunderbird, in the example they are "Test Old" and "Test New".

  1. Highlight all messages located in the inbox for your Old account, then right click and Copy To: >> New Account >> Inbox
  2. Drag any self-created folders in old account (that you originally setup) to the new account (this will copy them). Examples here are "Orders" and "Important to Save"
  3. Move into the Sent Mail folder of old account, and drag messages within into Sent Mail for your new account and repeast for the "Drafts" folder.

Click the New account name and "Get Mail" - this will sync your stored mail to the new server.

Log into the webmail for your new account and verify folders and emails are in place - you should now have completed your webmail transfer.
