Adding/Modifying Wiki Content

Great, you're a go-getter. You either have something to add or you saw something that needs to be fixed. First, please log in or sign up as a wiki user. Image:Asterisk_yellow.png If you are signing up for the first time, your email will need to be verified before you can edit.

Image:Info.png Your email will only be used within the wiki structure to identify you as a valid member/editor. It is invisible to the public, and we are never going to share it with anyone, or use it to send you unrelated emails.

To add something is simple, but before you do that Image:Search.png search. Make sure the article you're going to write isn't already in the wiki. So, you've determined your article is unique, great, let's include it. Input a smart name into the search box. For instance 'How to use MySQL database from an external source' and then click go. Once the next page loads, click on the link You can create this page. Create the page and input as much content as possible while remaining clear and concise. Once you're satisfied with your work, click Save page. And you're done! Do you have something else to add? Rinse & Repeat!

To edit an already existing page with sections, simply click the edit button above the section you wish to edit. This schema appears counter-intuitive at first, we understand.

Word of caution

Image:Exclamation.png This wiki is organized using categories, which are listed at the very end of each page's source. Please make certain that, when editing an entire page, or editing the last section of a page, that you do not inadvertantly delete the page's categories. Thank you!

HOWTO: MediaWiki's formatting language can be daunting for those not familiar, so here's a few tools and howtos to get you started:

Howtos and Cheat sheets

Web browser extensions and toolbars

  • Firefox extension, which adds a contextual menu with editing assistance: Weekedit. Unfortunately, this extension does not yet work on Linux, as of version 0.8. --Carla Hufstedler 16:38, 11 January 2007 (EST)
  • Firefox extension/toolbar: wikipedia.mozdev This extension is in active revision/development and translation, and the developers want any and all assistance so that 1. it's available in as many languages as possible; and 2. it will be compatible with the latest browser versions. --Carla 10:45, 2 February 2007 (EST)
    • Image:Page_white_code_red.png Greasemonkey script edited to include wiki.site5.com: assists with reading and editing by managing and clearing Mediawiki's Squid-based cache. Download the .txt file, rename it Clearwikicache.usr.js and install into Greasemonkey.

AbiWord

  • AbiWord, the word processor for Linux, OSX, and Windows, has a Mediawiki-formatting plugin, so you can write and edit in AbiWord, then simply paste your work into the appropriate edit box in this wiki.

For Linux, the plugins are downloaded via the package manager of your choice/flavor as abiword-common and abiword-plugins. --Carla Hufstedler 11:10, 12 January 2007 (EST)

For Windows, the abiword-plugins-impexp (.exe format) can be downloaded from abisource.com/downloads/abiword/latest/Windows/

Eclipse

The plog4u version has nicely organized instructions and screenshots.

Translate a textarea from Textile to HTML, BBCode, or MediaWiki markup
    • Image:Page_white_code_red.png The Mediawiki-hosted Clear Wikipedia Cache userscript, edited to include wiki.site5.com: assists with reading and editing by managing and clearing Mediawiki's Squid-based cache. Download Image:Script_code_red.png the .txt file, rename it Clearwikicache.usr.js and install into Greasemonkey, Geekmonkey, or Creammonkey. Upon script activation, you should see a new tab on our wiki, as shown in this screenshot:

Perl

  • Perl script: download in .txt format, saving it instead with the PL file extension. Haven't tested this one yet. — Carla 13:59, 2 February 2007 (EST)
