Apparently, emoticons were born in 1982, when Scott Fahlman introduced the smiley and the frowny faces,
to allow people to distinguish between serious posts and jokes. Since those two faces were inadequate to convey the full range of emotions, over time Internet users developed a more sophisticated glossary of symbols.
