The What and the Why of the Glossary

Definitions of geek jargon used in our forums, our wiki, and that somehow relate to website hosting.

Yes, some terms included (perhaps many terms) may deal more with online life, with geekiness and its usage, etc. But that's the point, in a way—online industries tend to assume, in my experience, that everyone knows the lingo, that everyone's been online since the 1990's, or that everyone is deeply invested in the online (sub)culture.
Not true; some people just want a website, and are intimidated, irritated, or frankly just turned away by this seemingly dizzying world of acronyms and the seemingly prevailing intolerance with any neophyte.

So my goal, when I began this glossary category, was to express that, at Site5, rookies are welcomed, helped...and celebrated.

If you stumble across a term or acronym in our forums, elsewhere in communication with us, or anywhere else on the web, and it's not represented with a glossary entry, simply create a glossary page for it:

Create a glossary term's page

1. Type wiki.site5.com/The_Term in your browser's address bar, and hit the Enter key.

2. You'll be told the page doesn't exist, and offered the chance to create it. Don't panic! Just scroll down to the bottom, and click on the first button, Save Page. Ignore everything else.

3. Your actions have now added that page to the list of Wanted Pages, which we watch specifically for such new entries.

Just remember, Site5 does not consider "newbie" a derisive term. Far from it! So ask questions, create pages for information you seek, and enjoy the sites you maintain. It's all supposed to be fun. --Carla Hufstedler 14:31, 31 January 2007 (EST)
